                                                             PAK-US RELATIONS: POST OBL

Our close relationship with US, dates back to independence. Our leaders since then, whether of military or civil could take no step on internal and transfrontier matters without tacit approval of the master. When we seek the role of beggar then "beggars are not the choosers". ZAB was not exception but when he found himself in tight corner tried to get out of it by challenging the might of the US expecting a massive public support. It was a dare devil act challenging the US might openly on the street of Rawalpindi. ZAB inspite of his shrewdness could not measure the fallout. There was no choice left for him and he had to pay the price which was his eventual fate and a lesson for all those who would ever dare to do so. To cut it short, we were stabbed at the back by our friend whenever we needed their all out support. Inspite of our history in retrospect, we keep following the same role because US influence has creeped so deep in our grain that we are mentally and physically paralyzed. There is loud verbosity all around by political parties not in power but is meaningless when our people are not prepared to step out as a force setting aside our origin, caste, creed, political affliation and class in the society.

The US influence is so intense that every govt when formed are pick-n-chose of our master. It is openly said that appointment of President, PM, main line ministers, Federal Secretaries, some key Ambassadors, Intelligence Chiefs and even Chiefs of Armed forces  are vetted and short listed by the masters. Years back, I heard that in one of the high profile parties, a leading political figure was discussing the political culture. He disclosed that in 90's, a popular leader was elected in majority and was waiting for a visit to the President House to get his formal nod to form the govt. Before she could call on the President, a messenger instructed the leader to visit the master's office in the capital where a list was handed over for appointment at the key positions.(It is a hearsay) The leader instinctively felt greatly disturbed and called an emergent meeting of the party to seek their support to defy the dictation. To her great surprize, she found that more than 3/4th of the party members strongly supported the nomination dictated. This is how our masters serve their interest.

The OBL incident has shaken the nation but public response is confined to media only which makes no difference to the US authorities. Even in the media, some anchor persons follow the same dictations to influence the mindset of the common man to accept everything as fate-accompli. The recent visit of John Kerry left nothing to feel that some change is in offing to respect our interest and soverignity to rebuild the lost confidence and trust. Mr. John Kerry without mincing his words retreated the same line of action and this time more forcefully. Soon after, our PM rushed to our trusted friend China. It was a good diplomatic move. But it all depends how we present our case to our Chinese friends. Our relationship with China in recent years has dipped down and we are losing a good and trusted friend. However, even in this depression, China is the only country which openly warned US to not to mess with Pakistan after OBL operation. It is a support which only a trusted friend will give and we should value it. Unfortunately, it was not highlighted on the media except on the internet. If we falter again then we are left alone in the comity of the nation. We should then be ready to accept minnows like Afghanistan to stare in our eyes to give them space at our own cost. Anything can happen.

I had the chance to exchange my views on recent happenings with three leaders of the leading political parties. I expressed my appreciation for the diplomatic move by the PM to visit China and seek their advise. A similar visit to Iran at this time is likely to be of great importance. Secondly, I asked the political leaders to bring their followers in great numbers on the street to show complete solidarity with our friend China and Iran. I was surprised to note that no one is prepared to displease our master and they kept arguing that if they do so we will be denied all aids and we will be left high and dry. These leaders tried to influence me that have I considered losing billions of dollar aids which is much more than the aid we get from China. It was pathetic. I reminded them that do they know that US is also getting huge loan from China to support their economy. They had no answer.

My point is that when we can not match the US moves which is offensive, brutal and complete disregard to the soverignity of a nation then the option left is to make suggestive diplomatic moves to keep them at arms length. If any member of this forum has the means to convey our feelings to the people who matter, then we would be contributing to the cause of Pakistan which should be our objective. When PM has very rightly made a bold diplomatic move by visiting China, it should be supported well and proper by the public at large irrespective of party, caste, class and ethnicity. All our political parties and other organizations should come out in full force showing solidarity with China and Iran. The media should play the major role.
Only yesterday, the media reported that some US senators have shown their serious concern on PM Gillani visit to the China soon after John Kerry visit. Their concern will further aggravate if PM decides to follow up his diplomatic move by visiting Iran also. Is it asking too much from our ruling elite? The time never waits for anyone. If we do not act correctly at the appropriate time, this nation will not forgive us. We must show to the world that we are not alone, we have trusted friends sharing common border and interest.
As I explained earlier that we can not expect that anyone from the ruling alliance will come out on the street. A public awakening is needed.
